How Do You Get Stains Out of Carpet? – Carpet Cleaning Naperville, IL

Have you ever wondered how do you get stains out of carpet? Crystal Image Cleaning Services, a carpet cleaning company serving Naperville, IL shares with you some consumer tips for handling stains at home.

The most important factor with any spot or spill that occurs is time. The longer the substance stays on the carpet, the higher the likelihood of permanent damage.  For example, pet urine can soak through the carpet, into the padding and even the floor below.  So removing the substance as soon as possible will limit the damage and potential costly repairs.

The information listed below will help to remove most simple stains from your carpet.

Remove any solid material with a spoon or a dull knife. Be careful so as to not cut the carpet.

Blot up any liquid using a clean, dry, white towel. Never rub or scrub. This could either push the substance deeper into the carpet or cause damage to the carpet fibers. The towel must be white or you could transfer the towel’s color into the carpet, adding to the problem.

Apply cleaning agents to a white towel, not to the carpet directly. This will prevent over application of the product, which could damage the carpet backing or padding.

Cleaning Agent #1. Mix 1 teaspoon of white dish detergent and 1 cup of warm water. This can be used for the following types of spills: Alcoholic beverages, blood, carbon, chewing gum, chocolate, coffee, crayon, excrement, furniture polish, graphite, grass, glue (white), grease, ice cream, ink, medicine, mud, mustard, paint (latex, wet) rust, shoe polish, soft drinks, tea, toner, urine, and vomit.

Cleaning Agent #2. Mix equal parts of white distilled vinegar and lukewarm water. This can be used for the following types of spills: Alcoholic beverages, bleach, blood, chocolate, coffee, cosmetics, crayon, excrement, furniture polish, grass, ice cream, medicine, mud, and nail polish.

If an item is found in both lists above, use Cleaning Agent #1 first, and then use Cleaning Agent #2 if the spot remains. Juice and wine spots can be removed by using Cleaning Agent #1, but the spot should be flushed with cool water first.  Do not over saturate!

Rinse the area by spraying clear water and blotting with a clean, dry, white towel.

Once all visible staining has been removed, place a clean, dry, white towel over the area. On top of the towel, place a heavy colorfast object. Leave overnight. Replace wet towel with dry one. Repeat this procedure until area is completely dry. Do not walk on the carpet until completely dry.

Gently brush the area with your hand to lift the tufts.
